Groningen Hit by Massive Earthquake

Homes Destroyed, Injuries Reported

A powerful earthquake struck the city of Groningen in the Netherlands on Tuesday, causing widespread damage and injuries. The quake, which measured 4.9 on the Richter scale, was the strongest to hit the region in years.

According to local officials, multiple buildings have collapsed, including several residential homes. Emergency crews are currently searching for survivors and providing assistance to those affected. At least five people have been hospitalized with injuries, but the full extent of the casualties is still unknown.

The earthquake occurred at approximately 03:00 AM local time and was felt throughout the northern part of the Netherlands. The epicenter was located near the village of Huizinge, which has been the site of several previous earthquakes in recent years.

The cause of the earthquake is still under investigation, but it is believed to be related to gas extraction activities in the region. Groningen is home to one of the largest natural gas fields in Europe, and the extraction of gas has been linked to increased seismic activity in the past.

The earthquake has caused widespread power outages and disruptions to transportation. The government has advised residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel as aftershocks are possible.
